This weekend at the much anticipated E3 conference, a trailer for Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts 3 showcasing the world of Frozen was presented, along with a release date. This announcement, which has been thirteen years in the making, is that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released on January 29, 2019 for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Warning: Possible spoilers ahead!

First and foremost, there’s a release date! It’s finally happening! Even though there’s been other teasers, trailers, and gameplay, having an official release date really cements the idea that “Yes, Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally coming out and we’ll be able to wrap up some story lines.” It’s important to note that despite being titled Kingdom Hearts 3, the game is actually a sequel to Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, with game director Tetsuya Nomura stating it will pick up immediately after the events of KH: DDD. Speaking of wrapping up storylines, while this won’t be the final game in the series, this will be the last one for the Dark Seeker/Xehanort chapter. For those that don’t know, there are many games within the Kingdom Hearts series and the plot is very convoluted. To catch yourself up on the story thus far, you can check out this plot summary here which does a fairly good job of filling in the blanks.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous. Watching the trailer, some of the scenes looked as if they were clipped straight from the movies. The attention to detail is phenomenal, especially when showing off the combat and Gummi Ship scenes. The appearance of a possibly possessed Aqua at the end was a real shocker and now I’m even more excited to see where the plot is going to go from here. While I’m disappointed in the delay, I was honestly expecting it. Being a Kingdom Hearts fan just prepares you for these kinds of things. Based on the information given about the game thus far and seeing the footage, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this game.
