A New Chapter is Coming to Elder Scrolls Online

With all of the (predominantly negative) news regarding Fallout 76, a lot of people seem to have forgotten that Bethesda has actually made a great multiplayer game: the Elder Scrolls Online. Granted, it was actually developed by Zenimax Online Studios, but it’s still a Bethesda product, and it’s a whole lot of fun to play.

Like any good MMO (maybe Fallout 76 should take note), ESO has been buoyed by a steady stream of updates, from additional dungeons to seasonal events to full-blown expansions, which they refer to as chapters. Both the Morrowind and Summerset chapters added a substantial amount of new content to the existing game, with new zones, quests, skill lines, and characters. And although Summerset is less than a year old, it seems like the next chapter is already in the works.

According to a post on the official site, a “massive” announcement for the Elder Scrolls Online will drop January 15 on Twitch. Teased as “the season of the dragon” with the tagline “cat’s out of the bag,” it seems safe to assume the chapter will focus on the Khajiit race, and dragons - whom we’ve previously faced as both friends and foes in Skyrim - will be central to the story. Lore-wise, the Khajiit have never been tied closely to dragon-kind, so it will be interesting to see how this new chapter ties these two disparate elements together.

Hopefully the January 15 stream, scheduled for 5 p.m. EST at twitch.tv/bethesda, will shed more light on the plot, as well as any other additions that will be included in the new chapter, such as character classes or skill lines.

And if you can’t wait until January 15, Redditors have allegedly datamined some more details. Please note that the following should still be considered speculation until the official announcement is made:

Venture to the land of the Khajiit in The Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr, our newest chapter, an epic story in an all-new zone. Face dread creatures from the past—Dragons!—and discover the dark skills of a new character class, the Necromancer, as you join with new friends and old enemies to save Elsweyr from war and devastation.

ESO reaches new heights of storytelling with a war against the Dragons that unfolds and builds over four quarterly releases to an unexpected climax.

Obviously I’m taking this post with a grain of salt, but I do hope that this upcoming chapter is set in Elsweyr, which we haven’t gotten to fully explore in an Elder Scrolls title since the original Arena. I’m also curious to see how the Necromancer class will differentiate itself from Sorcerer and Nightblade, as both classes already have skill lines that focus on dark magic and life-draining abilities, respectively.

Given how well the Morrowind and Summerset chapters were designed, I’m sure that whatever we get with this next expansion will make for another thrilling adventure in Tamriel.
