Nintendo Loves Indie Games; Aims to Release 20-30 Per Week
Via Game Informer - "During Nintendo's 78th annual shareholder meeting, the day that Shuntaro Furukawa took over as president of Nintendo, the company held a Q&A session with shareholders and Nintendo's executive team including outgoing president Tatsumi Kimishima. The Q&A was translated into English today and you can find the entire thing here. This year, one shareholder asked specifically about the relationship between Nintendo and indie games.
"Indie games have become a hot topic recently," the investor asked. "As games made by small-scale developers around the world with relatively low development costs, how will Nintendo integrate these kinds of games into its future business strategy?"
While the entire answer is basically a roundabout way of saying yes, Nintendo licensing head Susumu Tanaka did mention one particularly interesting plan for the Switch eShop.
"We started working with indie developers during the Wii U generation," Tanaka started. "For Nintendo Switch, we set up a development environment that supports Unity middleware, which is used on smartphones and other platforms. We are also actively engaging with indie developers at video game-focused shows and other events in different regions. We also had a Nintendo booth at the BitSummit indie game event held in Kyoto, where we showcased some games. Some of the indie games already released have gone on to become million sellers worldwide. In the future, we are looking to release around 20 to 30 indie games on Nintendo Switch per week, and we definitely expect to see some great games among them."
If you aren't already overwhelmed every Thursday when you pop into the Nintendo eShop, your luck may be running out: Nintendo's goal to release 20-30 indie games a week is a lofty one to say the least. While the Switch is the perfect device for a lot of Nindies, and allows indie developers to share their work on a very established platform, there's a real possibility that quality games will be overlooked amongst the landslide of options released each week.
As the article mentions, Nintendo already releases an average of 15-25 games a week. It is simply unrealistic to expect the average consumer to sift through all the releases when shopping for a new game. For many gamers, too many options can actually be a bad thing when you're not sure what you want - kinda like cycling through Netflix when you're not sure what to watch, and settling for your 45th viewing of The Office. Is that RPG really worth the $15? Or is that side-scrolling shooter on the second page going to give you a little more bang for your buck? Should you pick up another exhilarating platformer?
At end of the day, having options is certainly a great problem to have as a gamer, and we should commend Nintendo for giving indie developers a chance to succeed. That being said, timing indie releases could be a saving grace. Just look at the fear Rockstar's release date of Red Dead Redemption 2 has struck in the rest of the industry. At the end of the day the truly good games should still find their way to the top, but Nintendo is running the risk of unique entries don't get lost in the shuffle.
